I have now reviewed the relevant postings from PeterH - 26844, 854, 871, 874, 877, 923.

The first two do contain helpful comments.

844 comments that "Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain nor Britain but is part of the UK." It also points to the Wikipedia item.

854 points out that "inhabitants of Northern Ireland are Irish but not British because neither they nor ... have lived in Britain."

So in both postings PeterH uses the term Britain and obviously knows what he means. Seems to be that he is saying that Britain is the same thing as Great Britain? (Where Great Britain = England + Scotland + Wales + various smaller islands.)

However the Wikipedia item does not define the term precisely but more or less suggests that Britain is the same thing as the UK (which of course does include NI).

It is all very confusing. I am getting the feeling that the term Britain is not well defined and can mean either Great Britain or the UK depending on the whim of the user.

(As an aside, I have noticed that England, Scotland etc. do not compete separately at the Olympic Games - unlike the Commonwealth Games. They compete at the Olympics under the inclusive banner of GBR which presumably DOES include NI (?). Curiouser and curiouser.)
