I'm sorry, but I am a bit sceptical about Alan's claim. There may be a very few who neither participate in TARS events nor read the publications but I've never met them, and I've been in TARS since it started. There are probably quite a few who glance through the publications with pleasure and look forward to a detailed read some time and then never quite get round to it. I am ashamed to say I have done this myself occasionally in the past, but ever since the time I was involved with TARS publications I have read every word because I realise how much work has gone into them!

Just a footnote on the 'Spirit of Adventure' - quite a few TARS members and their families relive AR-style 'adventures' of their own invention when they are out for the weekend or away on holiday. By definition, AR-type adventures are spontaneous, and so are the best children's games (I speak from distant memory). Because of various geographical, financial, staffing and H&S issues, TARS is unable to hold outdoor events in all parts of the country every weekend. So TARS families make up their own, and very often send reports of these to the publications. I must immediately add that TARS does put on events for juniors from time to time, and these have been very successful. I really think the '80%' inactivity stat given in Signals is misleading and doesn't represent the reality 'on the ground'.
