one supposes by servants who were not considered part of "the whole lot of us"

and the money they had was not to be thrown about

"“Went without,” said Mrs Blackett. “What else could we do?”"

hot pots take a lot of time to prepare so not really a matter of money.

Most unlike AR not to list the "other things", hope there was lots of cake, and some apples.
