"My dear Owen, I do see harm in trying to add more detail to AR's stories."

I would agree with you, if I was re-writing the stories themselves PeterH.
However I do like adding additional background by either asking questions myself of reading the ideas of others on TarBoard. I feel it adds to the understanding of the background of the stories.
The history of the 1930's has always fascinated me with the transition from slump to boom and the lead up to the second world war. Some TarBoarders will be first generation memories of that period, but I doubt if many actually lived through that period.
Anyway others do provide fascinating insights into the background of the books. If I had a copy of the tide tables for 1932, I would be researching Laurence's question. Alas the nearest I have got is a Lloyds Calendar for 1935 - absolutely no use.
However I am always amazed at the way threads meander from the original topic to something completely different.
I suspect we all may enjoy slightly different aspects of AR. To me the adding of information surrounding the stories is one of the pleasures.
