"sent down" rather than "brought down" suggests a servant by order.

Cards on table: I am an utter out-and-out Ransome devotee, always have been. I love every word he wrote. I adore his recreation of an ordered, settled, by and large well-adjusted lakeland society. He painted pictures - maybe a little utopian, but all the same utterly charming, inoffensive, and totally free from deepseated resentments. This was the setting for the children's adventures. AR got his stories published, and we are all able to share these light-hearted and engrossing books.

All this is IMHO. Also, IMHO, the practice of analysing individual words and phrases used by the characters when speaking informally to detect some sort of social injustice is, to me, verging on obscene - sorry but there's no other word for it. How can anyone enjoy Ransome if they read his books with this attitude? I just don't get it.

Perhaps I am reading a different set of books. I have 12 books on the shelf - each of them provides a huge amount of enjoyment, without any need of explanation of water supply to houses, or the 'class system'. OK, we each approach AR in a different way, but I would plead that those of us who like AR's settled and innocent settings and anecdotes should be allowed to say so. I can never read the 'hot-pot' incident again now without recalling Ian's sour comments. Thank you, Ian, for spoiling a page of Winter Holiday for me for ever.

There are, fortunately, still plenty of pages left. I'd like to keep those 'socially unanalysed', so the remedy is in my own hands obviously. You win, Ian. One final request - please do not 'fillet' out sections of my post in italics for schoolmasterly repudiation. Please leave me a little bit of dignity, for once.

I wish all TarBoarders good luck.
