My childhood preference was not to watch the films of books I particularly enjoyed because they never came up to my imagination.
And even now; the problem with film adaptations is that they never have the time to develop the depth that's in the books. Even Lord of the Rings (to take an extreme example), with its three huge feature film episodes, suffers from this. 'Normal' adaptations, into 90 or 120 minute films, are in general quite inadequate. The compression kills it. The film of SA was a bit of an exception, but only a bit...
I much prefer TV adaptations. Again in general, they have far more time to play with and, nowadays, rather better script writers. At least, they do in Britain.
