Nobody has yet mentioned Pauline Marshall's little book: "The Ransoming" which describes the activities of a couple of families of children, one group of whom stayed at Bank Ground Farm.
It is part real and part fantasy, with, I think, fictitious names for the real protagonists. The action takes place in and beside the lake.
It is (or was) available from the TARS shop in paperback.
I found it a pleasant and evocative read.
