As John pointed out, this sort of mathematical conundrum might have appealed to an older Dick or possibly an older Roger. Probably too theoretical for John.
And as Jock suggested, if we find a Tarboard post that we don't understand, or think inappropriate, then why not just pass over it in silence rather than commenting adversely and wait till a better one comes along, or even, dare I say it, post one that you do think appropriate.
The problem is that we all come to Ransome with a different set of experiences and other interests. In any well-regulated pub, we don't shut down other people's conversations because we don't like or understand them, we go and start a better one with other people. If we are more interesting then the others will drift over and join in, or else they will continue to discuss the minutia of mathematics without necessarily bothering us.
