Agreed. It is a pity that people keep forgetting this. Indeed I agree with all Bill and Andrew say.

But I will point out that Wizard and Firefly were not Toppers but fairly massively built traditional dinghies, at a guess 14 feet long, and John and Nancy would have been 14 or 15 and quite experienced.

You don't necessarily need a rescue boat. I did once pull the crew of a capsized Enterprise out of the sea round about there and salvage their boat, all under sail as I hadn't a working engine. But surely on that day the conditions would have been pretty smooth.

Anyway Commander Walker did tow the dinghies home. He clearly was in no mood to even risk new adventures.
