I agree, Duncan, it is lazy journalism. At the very least, the journo could have said that AR was 'said by some to have been a British spy'. Although AR certainly passed on information to MI5, he was considered a Bolshevist. Although in March 1919 MI6 denied that AR had Bolshevik sympathies, it seems he was never really trusted by British Security Services. A useful summary of the recently released Intelligence Papers relating to AR was published in the Summer 2005 issue of Signals, a TARS publication. It contains the wonderful episode where AR was questioned by the Head of Special Branch at Scotland Yard - when asked what his politics were, he replied 'fishing'.
