I have read about Eric Newby's voyage in the Moshulu in his book a traveller's life which contains an extract from the Last Grain Race.
Newby, comes from the old school of splendid British eccentrics who spurned personal danger in pursuit of their interests and hobbies. In this he is similar to AR.
In The Last Grain Grace he describes how he had to swarm up (like John climbing the lighthouse tree) the last few feet of the Moshulu's 198 ft mainmast and sit on the cap before the Mate would take him on as an apprentice.
It's great that the Moshulu has survived, but sad that this fine ship no longer sails, but languishes as a restaurant after a Disneyland-style restoration.
