The tailpiece to Chapter 2 in SA (hardback edition) gives a good idea of what Swallow should be like.
I would think the main hull colour is white, but the top band - black, dark blue, dark green?
Because Amazon is described as varnished, I have always taken this to be varnished wood. I doubt if AR would have described paintwork as varnished although it is often finished with a couple of coats of the same.
