I don't think that there's an explicit or direct link to AR- I posted about it here because it had come up here. But it does have a great deal to do with the nature of British society and I find that the clarity and directness of AR's writing give a fascinating and quite full picture of a certain part of that society, at a certain time in history. It's indirect, but none the less accurate for that.

It's one of the levels on which I enjoy the stories- there are others of course, such as being in love with Dorothea (come on, I'm sure I'm not the only one) and the bewitching descriptions, such as the rainy days in PM or Jim Brading's lost days in Ipswich and the day spent in Flushing, in WD. When I was eight years old, I loved different aspects such as the straight adventures, but I've aged just a tiny tad since then...
