Apologies if this has been mentioned on TarBoard before, but I don't recall it. On p. 158 of S&A (Cape, my edition is 1948) the Swallows are returning down to the shore from the charcoal burners' camp. Titty and Roger decide to 'galumph'. So does John, but he is pre-occupied. In the text it says 'Captain John galumphed half-heartedly'. The next sentence is about John worrying whether he should have told the Billies that they were enemies of the houseboat man. Then it says again 'He galumphed half-heartedly.' We already know that. Did AR intend to delete one of these sentences but never got round to it? AR was a most economical writer and there seems no point in the repetition.

In the early draft of S&A held at Abbot Hall, the 'John galumphing' sentence is repeated. For some reason I don't have any of the paperback versions of S&A - Puffin or Red Fox - but I dare say both sentences appear in those too?
