Following the links to Lord Alfred Douglas I discovered that Oscar Wilde was remanded to Holloway Prison in London, usually thought of as a womens prison. My first thought was that the authorities sent him there because they thought he would be safer among a group of women, but further research revealed that in those days it was common to send prisoners on remand to Holloway! Just a thought.
