When I was excavating out in Oman a couple of years ago, I was working out in the desert in the interior with the nearest hut (let alone house) an hour's drive from the site. And yet I could still get 4 bars on the signal for my mobile. Later on in the year, I climbed to the top of St Catherine's Mount (or Mt Sinai) in Egypt and looking out over the expanse of mountains and desert in every direction, I managed to send a text message to a friend with a reply back in a few minutes! Yes, a long way from pigeons........
