I suspect the answer to this, Claire and John, will be to visit the BT archives in Holborn, London.

If you visit http://www.ancestry.co.uk, and join up (I did this and now forget how I did it) they hold, on line, the BT phone directories from 1880-1984.

I've simply used it to look up my family's phone numbers and addresses in the '30s and '40s, but they are facsimile pages and quite fascinating. If you like lists...
