Thank you Ed for this further piece of research, I had missed this phrase completely. Your search engine on the books is a very valuable tool. Also to PeterH's memory of this phrase.
It does make it seem very likely that the D's were based in London.

I had looked further back to the time AR was working in London, there were ice rinks in the early 1900's at the site of the London Palladium, in Petty France and at the Princes Skating Club in Knightsbridge.
In view of AR's long association with the Manchester Guardian, I had also considered the Manchester Ice Place which was open from 1910 to the early 1960's.
There may be other ice rinks in London that were actually near UCL, the history is not well documented.
