The OED defines 'kid' and 'kids' as "a child or young person", so why wouldn't AR have used it? It's not in the least offensive.

I think that at the time, OED notwithstanding, it was extremely sloppy usage. Unthinkable in the middle classes. And as far as I know, AR did not use it.

Come on, Ed, prove me wrong...
