There is another aspect to 'kids', in UK at least. It often is used by politicians and other public figures trying to show how connected they are to young people. This puts the back up of us fogeys.
A good example of this was when a new charity was set up in the 90s for deprived children. It was called "Make Kids Happy" (I think, or something very close to that.) I instantly made a mental note never to give it a penny, and was gratified when it collapsed a few years later. The report I saw said it apparently spent all the funds it raised on its own expenses. Meanwhile, the long-established Children's Society continues to do good work.
