"Cricket was the major sport in the summer."

Does that mean it takes all Summer to play a game, or can a game be played in 2-3 days?

I may be wrong, but I don't think Ransome has any mention of Cricket nor uses any Cricket-related terms in his 12 stories. But why try to use my memory... I'll just do a scan...

Voila, found three references:

---------- BSCH10.TXT
"It's no good going into old history," said Dr. Dudgeon.
"But you just keep your eye on those lads and give them
a hint that casting off boats isn't cricket as a general
thing."

---------- PPCH1.TXT
The basket was suddenly lighter, and Roger
felt as if he himself had tossed the pigeon up into the air.
It flew up above the roof, above the drifting white steam from the
engine, and swung round in circles above the house tops, above
the cricket ground, while the porter and Titty and Roger
watched it. The engine-driver and the fireman leaned out from
the footboard to see it too.

---------- WHCH6.TXT
[Packing new snow onto the igloo using spades.]

Presently they heard a noise as if someone were beating the
ground with a cricket bat. People were talking, too, and they
heard Nancy's cheerful, ringing voice, "Go it, skipper! Flatten it
in good and hard."

Oh well, so much for memory. Having those typed in TXT files does come in handy.

As an American, we seldom are exposed to the fine arts of cricket playing. I had the opportunity once to see a game. I was in Detroit, and Canada was just SOUTH of there across the river, so we went down there to Lancaster Park (old WWII Lancaster Bomber up on a pedistal as a memorial) and spent the day watching Cricket. Not knowing anything about it, I came away still not knowing anything about it, but the folks we were with wanted to see it, so I stuck it out. Sorry folks, but I "did not get it." Oh well, to each his own...

(Imagine, actually going SOUTH from a part of the USA and winding up in a part of Canada.)
