I think generally kid was used as a term of affection. In the north the term "our kid" normally meant a family sibling (usually male).
However it is a context sensitive word, if preceded by an expletive it was derogatory.
It was a slang word and I cannot remember any poetry in which it occurred. However there was a piece of doggerel for steam railway enthusiasts that was in use in the 1950’s.

Some kids were raised on dried milk
Some rich kids were raised on cream
Some poor kids were raised on nothing at all
But we were raised on steam.
