AndyB and Jon: the inevitable 'lumping in' has taken place and I find myself accused of opposing musicals. I don't oppose them at all. I was taking up an old argument with Andy about being able realistically to ignore an outrageous insult to AR's work. The argument is largely hypothetical, because if a theatre company did try to put on a seriously derogatory version of an AR story, (a) they wouldn't get copyright permission, and (b) it would defeat the object of the production which would be to get as many AR-lovers in the house as possible. I doubt if there are sufficient AR-haters around to make a hit of an anti-AR show, so we needn't worry.

As regards the average type of musical, I have no problem about them, although if the new S&A Musical was out of the 'Sound of Music' box I'd give it a miss. I still would have preferred a Britten Opera, because the score would be astringent and a welcome antidote to anything too 'yo-ho-ho' or sentimental. Personal view, of course.
