I think Alan, most of our corned beef came from Argentina rather than Brazil. The tapered can was so that you could decant the contents in one lump and then carve it.
It was popular at boarding school, the only person who wouldn't eat it was an Argentinian whose father owned a corned beef canning factory.
I believe the UK government still hold many cans for issue in an emergency, they recycle this stock releasing the older onto the market and buying in new.
I prefer corned beef with mustard pickle rather than sauce. I understood from my late father that "Brands A1" sauce was popular in the 1930's.We always used to buy it until it went off the market in the early 1970's, I think.
