It's a wrought iron frame, not steel, and it is massively corroded due to the "battery" effect of being separated from the Muntz metal sheathing by some very wet wood! It has really no strength left.

It would be perfectly possible to replace this; wrought iron is once more available and the necessary skills exist to form it.
