Jonathan: I can reply more thoroughly via email, if you like --and I'd love to chat further, if you have the inclination-- but this could get huge and inexcuseably off the topic of AR, so I'll just post here that I agree with much of what you offer, only differ in where I feel the line ought to be drawn on functional restoration (replication?), such as Pioneer or even Star of India, and archeological preservation, such as Australia or Wasa.

Where did you work at Seaport? I was in the rigging loft '97 to '99.
