Thanks for that essay, Alex. You've captured exactly the reason for restoring anything (let alone Cutty Sark) that, from any other than emotional reasons, should be allowed to simply diappear into nothingness.

In line with the mental pictures evoked at the end of your post, I offer this real picture, painted by Cornelis de Vries, of Cutty Sark under a following breeze and sea. What majesty! What grandeur! Who could think other than that she should be restored for future generations to admire as we do?
