This behaviour (particularly after the Boat Race) has a place in the class wars. My late maternal grandfather was a life long socialist and member of the Labour Party, his own father being a member from the beginning. One of the things that he used to tell me of as an example of how the working classes were treated differently by the law from the upper classes was getting drunk on Boat Race night - this was treated as high jinks, whereas similar behaviour after the FA Cup Final would land you in court!
