It was probably a lot better in the early 1930's than it is today. It was before they started adding lead to cope with incresing engine compression ratios and well before the days of unleaded petrol which is far worse that the original motor spirit - which was a highly refined product.

Billy probably survived! However in Cumbria (and elsewhere) you don't have to go that far for your carcinogens. Bracken roots contain carcinogens for a slow death plus cyanide salts for a quicker death.
