We all know that unexpected sounds at night alert and perhaps alarm one.
Nancy would have known about the window's foibles and how to open it carefully with the minimum of noise.
However it does reveal Nancy's lack of household knowledge. Otherwise she would have lubricated the sliding guide of the sash window with either candle grease or pencil lead to make the window open smoothly.

Incidentally as an aside on candle grease, I was taught when I was a school naval cadet, that if you lubricated the cup and pin of your rowlock you could row silently. Has anyone tried this please?
Probably a better use than voodoo dolls anyway.
