Agreed, PeterH; water works well enough, generally speaking, and there's a lot of it. If I get really desperate, a little of the petroleum jelly I keep aboard to quiet squeaking gaff jaws does pretty well, too. Though I admit, rowing a 3000lb sloop home against a foul tide, listening to the squawk of oarlocks, desperation can set in pretty quickly.
