The Conservancy seem to rely a lot on unpaid, unofficial lock helpers on the Thames.
However when I started, I was asked if I could swim. I replied in the affirmative and that also that I had life saving certificates. I was promptly told that I was never to go into the water under any circumstances.
It was a real sin to leave a lock unattended. Rescue of people was either with a long shaft or lifebelt on the end of a line.
Mind you, I could have used a barbed spike on the end of the long shaft on a Saturday afternoon at Boulters. The lock would be full of hirers who had just taken over a boat for the first time.
