There was a folding boat advertised in the National Geographic from September 1948 through various issues to April 1988 for "Folbot Folding Boat" by Folbot Corp., Long Island City, New Jersey. It sold for $119 - "Big $250 Craft" that folds into two bags that can be carried on top of your car! The picture looks like it holds two people, kayak style. I have never seen one, or have ever seen any other advertisements for them, but always thought they would make a fun boat for exploring Swallows and Amazons style (sort of). Of course they started advertising these about the time I started reading Mr. Ransome's books!
