Clearly, this is the missing plot point of Coots in the North- Nancy decides that the Swallows/Amazons/D's/Death and Glories will build birchbark canoes in order to explore the upper reaches of the River Amazon. The constant search for a substitute for bear fat adds excitement to the tale.
