I'm in the midst of (re)reading Patrick O'Brian's The Nutmeg of Consolation. Stephen Maturin asks if the current vessel is a sloop- which shocks his listeners. Since Jack Aubrey, a post-captain, is the captain, the vessel can't be a sloop, even though it would be one if a mere commander was in charge.
