The Japanese I-400 class submarines were over 5200 tons, and could carry up to three aircraft. They were intended to bomb the Panama Canal.

The Japanese also had the largest battleships ever: the Yamato and Musashi, of over 63,000 tons with 18 inch guns. They spent most of the war in harbour, and were promptly bombed and torpedoed when they ventured out of Truk in 1945!

PS: Many US submarines were built by the Electric Boat Co.
