In WDMTGTS Susan also shares with John the long night sail. While John is the prime mover in heading out to sea, once Susan is convinced by the wind and waves, she is a critical part of the team and steers for a long time while John sleeps. I have sometimes thought Commander Walker was excessively chauvinistic in praising John while overlooking Susan's contribution, but maybe that was Ransome's problem not his.
