As far as I remember, Susie was on a school trip to France when the war broke out in 1939, and was stranded there. She subsequently worked with the Resistance, and after the war, married a Frenchman and stayed there for the rest of her life.
I did speak to her on the phone in 1994, when Jill Goulder and I went looking for the house in Souookolook, but I never met her.
