The books represent more of an achievable fantasy than a realistic account: they are carried further by the reality of the settings, strong characterisation, good plotting and narrative completion.

AR's art is sublime. As children, we completely suspend our disbelief. We want to get to know the Swallows and play with them, as adults we play a grown up variant of the same game and ask "Is A the real X?" or "Is AR's Susan anything like Susie Altounyan?"

As a child in the early 60's, I visited the Secret Water area and met the farming family living in the Kraal. I was much more interested in trying to retrace the steps of the explorers than hearing about the real life explorations of AR in the Walton Backwaters!
