Was it Pigeon Post where John cautions Roger about “secret cheekiness”?

You are correct, Pam. They were just about to start fending off Squashy from the prospecting area.
Roger obviously had the same attitude at prep school towards his masters.

I think Roger may have had a difficult time as the youngest (excluding Bridget) of the four, perhaps he developed a cheeky resilience to cope with his elder siblings. He obviously enjoyed winding the others up.
He really came into his own when he found the "gold" in PP, also when he had to play his whistle to make "grown up noises" in WD.
He was prepared to get oily and smelly in WD, something the others were reluctant to, or couldn't, do.
My view was he was a necessary balance to the seriousness of John and Susan. I suspect AR may have enjoyed writing his words.
