In GN, Roger has left the party of red herrings to get even with the young laird, so is not captured with them. He goes to their prison, but then runs into the (smelly) bagpiper and is shot in with them.

Earlier, when Dick bolts from Mr Jemmerling’s office onto the deck of the Pterodactyl, Nancy says “.. if it was Roger instead of Dick, I’d know he’d been saying something cheeky”. Dorothea is worried: “Dick never would” but Roger says “He couldn’t, ... He would never think of the right thing to say”.

In ML, Roger is quite pleased with his drawing and extra line “Like this poor cretur” for the poem on the flyleaf in the front of the dictionary, though Susan & John disagree, saying he is a silly ass and the owner will be beastly to them all. But of course when Missee Lee sees it, she knows that “they are not thieves but scholars”, and so the writing saves their lives.
