Hullo skippers, this is my first mail to Tarboard from Japan.

Welcome on board Galumph. You'll find the crew take a bit of getting used to. But most of them are OK if you give them a bottle or two of grog. Beware the two Peters, they scrap like wildcats, but when under fire are amongst the best. Flushing, the captain likes things Bristol fashion, but his bark is worse than his bite and he's generous with the slops. Re your question, the 'postcript is neither by Nancy or Mr Ransome, but by some landlubber called David Sewart who should have known better. I hope he gets a thorough keel hauling. The 1958 author's note was never published when Mr Ransome was alive. I reckon he was put up to writing it by his Missus. It appeared in the books after his death, at her request. I like the 'red slippers' introduction which appeared in all editions of SA while Mr Ransome was alive. I reckon if it was good enough for Mr Ransome it should be good enough for us and they should put it back. So know you know. When I not darning sails in the sail loft you'll find me in the fo'c'sle. Come round any time you want a good yarn.
