Well, we could change that to read: "the Great Aunt believed that she MUST (at all costs) be correct (in her own view)"

It helps to have sharp minds to keep one on one's toes in semantic matters -- !! In my understanding, Policically Correct would actually refer to standards imposed by others which one (almost foolishly or not dependent upon who or what one wishes to please) adheres to as exemplified by the old man and son taking their donkey to market.

I would think that in the Great Aunt's mind she was trying to instill into the Amazons the way of life that she, her friends and past experiences would have upheld, which in her "time" would have been approved of by her peers - hence, that which in her mind would have been "correct" behavior. AND I have the impression that the forces behind the creation of the new Arthur Ransome Website are doing a repeat of the Great Aunt.

EA - who has spent way too many years away from academic minds --
