To me, the GA is a perfectly understandable character; just like the majority of us middle-aged and older folk who complain about the slipping standards of modern youth, she sees change and decay all around and believes it is her mission to keep up the vanishing standards. After all she came from a generation that dressed for dinner, even when dining alone in the jungles of empire.
The only difference between her and ourselves is we only see her from the perspective of the modern youth of her time, not her own perspective.
Even Nancy realises in P&M that there is more to the GA than just being a spoilsport and the comment that Nancy and the GA have much in common is all too truthful.
