I think we should organize an indepth sewing party to look at Ransom's exploration of the subversive stitch. Titty brings the Swallow to life by sewing it (I mean her) a flag. Mary Swainson restrains Roger, an otherwise energetic and hard-to-control boy, by sewing up his britches. Even the boys sew! Everyone takes to sewing gloves and hats in the Fram and making nets in GN. But what was Ransome's practical experience of needlework. Was he a mere observer of his mother and sisters at work? Or an active participant himself? Eagerly knitting his own jumpers and darning his own socks? Should we be celebrating the life and work of Ransome the Needler rather than Ransome the writer and sailor? Asking TARS to organize a Needleworking Weekend rather than a Literary Weekend? And demanding a serious sewing-related AR exhibition at Abbott Hall?
