Ah yes, but how many children are given that particular upbringing and education? And what about the rest? My view is that we should be flexible about this. If a word will cause offence today and it can easily be substituted, then I personally would change it. I have never ascribed to the view that AR's text is a sort of 'sacred gospel' whose every word is immortal and can never be altered. What about translations? However, I wouldn't favour any change unless it was absolutely necessary.
Mike - I am ducking out of discussion of the 'N' word, because IIRC it has already been hotly debated a few times on TarBoard. At least you will notice that I haven't used the 'k' word !
