Thank you for posting where to find the article and review and book. I find this fascinating by itself, but what an insight to find that the Swallows and Amazons really followed each others role systems.
We see the confusion even in the titles they used. Quartermaster is certainly a more realistic title for Susan than Mate, but since they thought they were following the Navy system, she is a Mate. So is Peggy, and that may be more appropriate for her since she and Nancy both seemed to procure food and supplies. Of course, the Amazons lacked any other crew, so we will never know if Peggy would have had a similar role to Susan in looking after younger crew members.
It is interesting how after years of discussions, new ideas can emerge that show us a different way to view our friends.
