Agreed - tolerated and otherwise "accepted" or otherwise allowed to exist in the local communities - the KKK fostered it slime -- this is one of the historical aspects of our culture that the "majority" does not realize. I remember articles and pictures in Life Magazine of KKK marches in the South from the 1940's. THANK GOODNESS THOSE DAYS ARE PAST! - And we sincerly hope they NEVER return, though, unfortunatly, the germs are still there. That, again, is why we MUST understand the psyche of the past to prevent the repetition - why and how these words and actions evolved.

Murdering racists are still murdering racists even though they were doing it out of ignorance and fear. Remember the scene at the pond from James Agee's "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" where the white kids were sent to scare away the black kids getting water because they really believed the black kids contaminated the water?
