In the early 1940's I lived in a house in Wales which must have been rather similar to Beckfoot. Not that I thought of that at the time, but it was the period when I was first reading the twelve books.
It had two staircases, unlike all other houses in which I have lived: one by the front door, leading up to the landing, where there were the main bedrooms and bathroom, and another which started in the kitchen, by the back door, behind what looked like a cupboard door. So it was normally out of sight, except when somebody suddenly emerged from it.
