You are quite correct in pointing out the apparent anomaly in windows, Laurence. However having casements on the first floor and sashes on the ground was not totally unusual in some Edwardian houses.
I was told the reason many years ago, but have forgotten it. I expect another Tarboarder will know. I vaguely think it was to do with health and being able to open a window against or to scoop in the prevailing wind.
On a slightly different topic, do others think Beckfoot was built in Edwardian style?
